Eat Like a Kid Again
I’m tapering again, which means it’s hard to focus on anything other than my upcoming 50k.
Today I killed time by researching and obsessing over fueling strategies during the race. It seems that the optimum fuel for these endurance events combines simple sugars (for a quick release of energy) with complex carbs (for a longer energy burn). The most frequently cited examples I find are:
Candy bars
Donuts
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
Soda
and let's not forget about chocolate milk afterward for recovery.
I get to eat like a kid again and people still look at me like I’m crazy for running this far.

Mmmmm.... enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteMtn Dew soda for energy. If youre bringing your own get the plastic bottle one and open it a few days before. You want it flat. If you drink it while its fresh and fizzy you will be bloated and gassy. good luck Chris G
ReplyDeleteSo do you throw donuts down the hatch while running? If so i'm very impressed and will plan to give that method of mid race fueling a try!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your taper. Tapers suck!
@middleagedrunner - I tried powdered donuts once while running, inhaled the powdered sugar when it exploded in my mouth, and ended up couphing and gasping for air for several minutes. It's definitely something you need to slow down to enjoy.
